On the first day of July 1921 the University of Dhaka opened its doors to students with Sir P.J. Hartog as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. The University was set up in a picturesque part of the city known as Ramna on 600 acres of land.The University started its activities with 3 Faculties,12 Departments, 60 teachers, 877 students and 3 dormitories (Halls of Residence) for the students. At present the University consists of 13 Faculties, 83 Departments, 12 Institutes, 20 residential halls, 3 hostels and more than 56 Research Centres. The number of students and teachers has risen to about 37018 and 1992 respectively.The main purpose of the University was to create new areas of knowledge and disseminate this knowledge to the society through its students. Since its inception the University has a distinct character of having distinguished scholars as faculties who have enriched the global pool of knowledge by making notable contributions in the fields of teaching and research.

In the 2nd Convocation address, he said: 'A man may be an excellent teacher of elementary subjects without the power to add to knowledge. But in advanced work I maintain that no one can really teach well unless he has the combination of imagination with critical power which leads to the original production (of knowledge), and for that if for no other reason, a university to be a true university must see that its teachers are men who are also capable of advancing knowledge.university to be a true university must see that its teachers are men who are also capable of advancing knowledge.

বাংলা ফাইটার স্কুল এন্ড কলেজের সকলকে বলতে চাই, জীবন আসলে সহজ না, কিন্তু জীবনকে সহজ করে নিতে হবে। আর তার জন্য প্রয়োজন একনিষ্ঠ পরিশ্রম। যে যত পরিশ্রমই তার জীবন তত সহজ এবং উন্নত। সমস্যা আসলে কাজের মাধ্যমে আসে আর সমাধান হবে যখন তুমি চিন্তা করতে শুরু করবে। আমার জীবনে অনেক সমস্যা ছিল এবং আমি তার চিন্তা করে সমাধান করেছি। আমার ছোটবেলা ছিলো দারিদ্রতার ভরপুর, কিন্তু আমার চিন্তা আর প্রচেষ্টা আমাকে থামিয়ে রাখতে পারেনি। তোমার পকেটের টাকাগুলো আছে সে টাকার কোনো একটিতে হয়তো আমার হাতে স্বাক্ষর খুঁজে পাবে। কারণ আমার প্রচেষ্টায় আমি বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্নর হয়েছিলাম। তোমাদের সকলের প্রতি আমার শুভকামনা রইল।

আমি মনে করি শিক্ষার্থীদের স্বপ্ন পূরণের লক্ষ্যে বাংলা ফাইটার স্কুল এন্ড কলেজ যেভাবে কাজ করে চলেছে তা সুদূর প্রসারী । শিক্ষার্থীদের প্রতি আমি যেটি বলা-প্রত্যেক শিক্ষার্থীকে অনেক বিচক্ষণ হতে হবে এবং মস্তিষ্কের বেশি বেশি ব্যবহার করতে হবে। সব সময় কঠিন কে সহজ করে চিন্তা করতে হবে এবং সেটি সমাধান করতে হবে। সবসময় মনে রাখবে চিন্তা ছাড়া তুমি কখনো জ্ঞানী হয়ে উঠবে না যে যত চিন্তা করবে সে ততো জ্ঞানী হয়ে উঠবে। তোমার মঙ্গল কামনায়।

আমি খুব আনন্দও অনুভূত করছিলাম, যখন আমি মনে করছিলাম আমি আজ একটি স্বপ্নের প্রতিষ্ঠান যাচ্ছি। আমাদের দেশে কখন যে এত সুন্দর একটি স্বপ্নের প্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ে উঠেছে আমি বুঝতে পারিনি। আমি এতটুকুও সময় অতিবাহিত করে বুঝতে পেরেছি এই স্বপ্নের প্রতিষ্ঠান কিছু জাপানি বন্ধুদের সহায়তা তোমরা অনেক উন্নতি করেছ। তবে শিক্ষার্থীরা তোমাদেরকে আমি বলতে চাই- তোমাদেরকে স্বপ্ন দেখতে হবে। মনে রাখতে হবে সপ্নের প্রকার আছে। রাতে ঘুমিয়ে ঘুমিয়ে স্বপ্ন দেখা হয় সে স্বপ্ন আসলে স্বপ্ন নয় যে স্বপ্ন তোমাকে ঘুমাতে দেয় না সেটাই আসল স্বপ্ন। তোমাকে স্বপ্ন দেখতে হবে এবং তা বাস্তবায়ন করার জন্ য সংগ্রাম করতে হবে। আমার স্বপ্ন ছিল একজন সাংবাদিক হব। আমি স্বপ্ন দেখেছি সংগ্রাম করেছি এবং সফল হয়েছি। সবসময় মনে রাখবে অসম্ভব বলে কিছু নাই তোমাদের দ্বারা সবই সম্ভব যদি তিনি প্রাণপণ চেষ্টা করো। তোমাদের সকলের মঙ্গল কামনায়।
